The Honest Lawyer Hotel, Croxdale
Simple, comfortable, and a few miles south of the city just off the A1(M), which makes it an easy stop whether you're heading into Durham or straight back out again the next morning. It won't win any design awards, but the rooms are clean, parking's easy, and it's consistently the cheapest of the three I recommend here. My pick when the day rate doesn't stretch to a city-centre stay.

The Manor House Hotel, West Auckland
Tucked away in its own grounds a little further out from the city, this is the one I recommend when you want somewhere with more character than a standard business hotel. It's quieter and more spread out, and works well if you're staying a couple of nights rather than just passing through. Worth booking ahead if you'd like a room looking out over the grounds.

Radisson Blu Hotel Durham
Right on the river, a short walk from the station and the city centre, this is the one I book when I want to walk to a meeting rather than drive. It's the most polished of the three, and the riverside rooms are worth asking for. My go-to when it's a client visit rather than just an overnight.

Durham sits just off the A1(M), so all three of these are easy to reach whether you're coming from Newcastle, Teesside or further south. Durham station has direct trains to London, Newcastle and Edinburgh if you're travelling on without a car, and the city centre itself is small enough to walk between meetings once you're parked up.
